Mainers head to Texas to help hurricane victims
WINDHAM (WGME) -- The victims of Hurricane Harvey will be getting some help from several Mainers.
The Red Cross says five Maine volunteers will head to Texas ahead of what's expected to be the worst hurricane to strike the United States in more than a decade.
It's part of a massive relief effort, as the Red Cross is mobilizing hundreds of trained disaster relief workers, truckloads of kitchen supplies as well as tens of thousands of read-to-eat meals.
One volunteer is 69-year-old Ruth Lathrop from Windham. She expects her duties will be in feeding or a disaster shelter.
"I'm anxious to get down there and do what I can to help," Lathrop said in a press release from the Red Cross. "Not everybody gets to do something like this."
The Red Cross relies on financial donations to provide disaster relief immediately. Donations can be made here or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word HARVEY TO 90999 to make a $10 donation.
