Maine Special Olympian heads to World Games in Austria
(PORTLAND) WGME - A 25 year old Portland man is training for the Special Olympics World Games in Austria. He and another athlete were chosen to represent Maine in the competition between 2600 Special Olympians from 106 nations. Lucas Houk is a three time defending state champion in the mile run, and also competes in cross country skiing. He and his Dad, an athlete and coach, are busy training at Riverside Golf Course in Portland. George Houk says his son is a great athlete, but "is as gracious in defeat as he is in victory, which is something that charms his parents."
Lisa Bird, of Maine Special Olympics, says "it is amazing to be able to compete at this level and to be able to have representation from the state of Maine at an event like this, it's just absolutely thrilling."
As for Lucas, he says "I hope I win a Gold Medal in Austria!"
Lucas leaves for the games in March. CBS 13 will continue to follow his journey.
