Local animal shelter prepares for Hurricane Irma impact
WESTBROOK (WGME) -- One local animal shelter is keeping an eye on Hurricane Irma, and taking steps now to save dogs on one Caribbean island that could be in the hurricane's path.
The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is partnered with other shelters in Puerto Rico.
It's believed the island has more than 100,000 stray dogs.
Many of them are brought to shelters in the U.S., including in Westbrook.
The refuge league says it is working to get the animals here before the storm hits.
If you'd like to help out, the shelter says it's always in need of foster families.
