Kennebunk debates restricting dog on beaches
KENNEBUNK (WGME) -- As the temperatures heat up, so does the debate about dogs on beaches.
In Kennebunk, some people want them banned entirely, but not everyone agrees.
A Kennebunk resident is claiming that the city is one bite from a massive lawsuit, and so he wants hours reduced for dogs on the beach.
The resident made the comments during a board of selectmen meeting at the end of March. According to town minutes, he says he is sick of seeing animals use the bathroom on the beach, and watching dog owners leave it.
Part of his comments included adding a leash-law since the beaches are all currently off-leash, and to strengthen time restrictions past the current 9 a.m.-5 p.m. from June to Labor Day.
The group "Keep Pooches on Gooches" says there’s opportunity for middle ground, like a plan for the 700 group members to stay off the beach until 7 at night, but two members say dogs are very much a part of the town’s identity.
We tried to contact the man who Pooches on Gooches says asked for more restricted hours on these beaches for dogs.
He was unable to speak with us.
