BANGOR (WGME) – Americans are still trapped in the Caribbean, and the State Department is working to get them home.

A group of Mainers, who rode out the storm in Sint Maarten, are finally back in the U.S., after a long journey.

A wedding in paradise soon took a turn for the worse as Hurricane Irma swept the Caribbean.

Congressman Bruce Poliquin's Office shared photos of the wedding party arriving in Canada late Sunday night.

The congressman met the party in Canada to ensure they would all be able to cross the border back into Maine.

Poliquin's office says the wedding party had been held up in St. Maarten with barely any shelter or resources.

They were able to get a flight to Punta Cana on Saturday after the U.S. shipped in supplies to clear the air port of debris.

From Punta Cana they flew to Canada, then took a bus to Bangor.

The party arrived Monday morning, and all returned safely.
