HAMPTON BEACH, NH (CNN Newsource) – Lifeguards on Hampton Beach say there seems to be a growing problem with hypodermic needles being left in the sand after a child got a needle stuck in her heel.

Lifeguards have found four needles on the northern end of the main beach this season, which is as many as in the last five years combined.

Hampton isn't alone.

A needle found in North Hampton a few months ago prompted the police chief to send out a notice.

"Unfortunately, these are the times we're living in with the statewide epidemic that's going on, we all need to be aware and a little more cautious,” North Hampton Deputy Fire Chief Jim LaJoie said.

First responders say anyone who gets stuck should see a doctor.
