Fraud charges dropped after allegations of forgery by DHHS
AUBURN (WGME) -- Fraud charges have been dropped against a Lewiston man, after allegations of forgery by DHHS workers.
A judge reversed more than a dozen fraud charges over the course of the past few days.
47-year-old Abdi Hassan of Lewiston was indicted on 15 counts related to welfare fraud back in 2013.
Those included both misdemeanor and felony charges of theft, forgery and unsworn falsification.
His attorney says last week, the state told him they uncovered allegations that applications for welfare benefits in the case may have been improperly filled out by DHHS case workers
In light of the new details, he says the judge dismissed all of the charges against Abdi.
The attorney calls this a win, but says there needs to be an investigation into DHHS.
We reached out to the Department of Health and Human Services for comment on the allegations, but a representative says they don’t have a comment at this time.
