Former President George H.W. Bush makes first public appearance since hospitalization
KENNEBUNKPORT (WGME) -- Former President George H.W. Bush, and his wife Barbara, are back in Maine.
Friday, the couple made their first public appearance since their hospitalization last month.
George and former First Lady Barbara Bush were on hand for the re-dedication of the bridge spanning the Kennebunk River Friday.
The bridge has been under construction for a little over a month, and after some pomp and ceremony, is now back open.
The event Friday was to re-dedicate the Matthew J. Lanigan Bridge.
The bridge was first built back in 1933. Way back in the day, the bridge would rise to allow large boats and ships to pass through the river and into the ocean.
Now the bridge serves cars and lots of foot traffic as the connector between Kennebunk and Kennebunkport.
It was the Bushes’ first public appearance in Maine this summer. The couple returned to Maine on Monday, some say bringing the beautiful summer weather with them.
Along with the former First Family, there were musicians and antique vehicles from the 1930s.
There was also a group of girl scouts there to help cut the ribbon, just like there was at the first bridge dedication in 1933.
