PORTLAND (WGME) -- A former Portland detective is finding success in his second career as an author.

Bruce Robert Coffin spent nearly 30 years as a Portland police officer, detective sergeant and counter terrorism expert working with the FBI.

Before he retired in 2012, he started writing.

The result is the John Byron mystery series.

The second book in the series, "Beneath the Depths" is out now.

Coffin says his character, John Byron is a good cop, who has some flaws.

The former cop says he enjoys writing complex characters.

“It's a lot more fun for the reader to have more depth,” Coffin said. “And not necessarily always having the protagonist do the right thing or do the good thing. I think it makes for a better read and a more realistic character.”

Coffin says his most recent book is about a prominent lawyer, not always liked by police, who turns up dead.
