Fire shuts down Route 302 in Raymond

The closure is due to a fire at the A La Mexicana Restaurant. (WGME)

RAYMOND (WGME) -- A major road is back open, after a restaurant burned in Raymond.

Crews closed a big section of Route 302, as first responders fought the flames.

Route 302 is back open, and traffic is moving slow through the area. Crews are still working on an active scene at A La Mexicana Restaurant.

Firefighters were called to the 3-alarm fire at around 2:30 p.m. for fire coming from the restaurant.

The Raymond fire chief says they believe the fire started in the kitchen and quickly spread to the attic.

Only employees were in the building getting ready for the dinner rush, and everyone was able to make it out safely.

The chief says the damage was mostly contained to the inside of the building, but would not estimate the extent of the damage.

He said part of the problem in battling the fire was many Raymond crews were already busy fighting another fire.

Firefighters in Raymond know this building well. They battled a fire in this same building back in 2007 when it was a different restaurant, so they knew exactly what to do and where to go.
