Woman dies in Oxford Meadow fire

OXFORD (WGME) -- An 85-year-old woman died and another woman remains in critical condition after a fire an elderly apartment complex in Oxford early Saturday morning.

State police identified the victim as Theresa Heino. Virginia Brown, 65, is in critical condition at Stephens Memorial Hospital due to smoke inhalation.

The fire broke out at Oxford Meadow, a large apartment complex along Route 26 about 2am. Fire Marshals say the fire started in a common area and spread thick smoke throughout the building. Residents were transported to the nearby high school after being evacuated from their apartments. The building did not have sprinklers.

A team from the Maine Fire Marshals' office is working to pinpoint the cause of the fire. An electrical inspector will be on scene Monday to continue the investigation.
