PORTLAND (WGME) -- The Trump administration is proposing deep cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency, and if those cuts are approved, some say it could mean trouble for Maine.

A new report released Thursday by the Natural Resources Council of Maine says the president's 2018 budget singles out the EPA for the deepest cuts of any federal agency, more than $2.6 billion.

The group says the cuts would cause crippling reductions at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

The proposed cuts would also eliminate programs that address radon pollution and lead poisoning in homes.

President Trump is calling for a 10 percent increase in defense spending and the administration says that money will come from cuts at the EPA and other federal agencies.
