Midcoast man charged after driving into tractor trailer in Damariscotta

Brenden Bezio of Tenants Harbor was arrested for operating under the influence after his car crossed the median and struck a tractor trailer on Route 1 in Damariscotta early Saturday morning.

DAMARISCOTTA (WGME) -- A Tenants Harbor man faces an operating under the influence charge after police say the car he was driving crossed a median and hit a tractor trailer on Route 1 in Damariscotta early Saturday morning, causing a passenger in the car to be ejected.

Brenden Bezio, 26, was driving north on the southbound side of Route 1 for a quarter mile when the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said he hit the tractor trailer, despite its driver's attempt to avoid a collision.

A female passenger in Bezio's car was ejected from the vehicle, transported to a local hospital and later taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police believe she was not wearing a seat belt.

A passenger in the tractor trailer was not wearing a seat belt and received treatment at a local hospital for back pain. The driver of the tractor trailer, Edgar Garcie of Springfield, Mass. and Bezio were wearing seat belts and escaped injury.

Route 1 was closed for hours as the accident was investigated and the scene cleared. Bezio's first court appearance will be in August.
