Crews clean up explosive fire in South Bristol
SOUTH BRISTOL (WGME) – Crews are mopping up after an explosive fire in South Bristol.
Fire officials say when they got on scene the building was fully involved, and there was even an explosion.
Assistant Fire Chief Gunnar Gunderson says they stayed in the trucks and used deck guns to spray the fire when the first arrived.
He says they didn’t want to get too close because an acetylene tank used to power a welding torch exploded.
Officials say the owner had someone welding outside; he turned around and the building was on fire.
Despite firefighters from five departments knocking down the flames in less than an hour, the building is a total loss, and Assistant Chief Gundersen says the owner lost more than his work shop.
"He lost a lot of stuff in there and he lost a lot of antique tools that were his fathers and stuff that can't be replaced,” Gunderson said. “That's the bad thing about something like this is that you lose stuff that can't be replaced."
Officials say they ruled the fire as accidental.
