PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) – Protesters are blocking one of the busier streets in Portland’s Old Port on a busy Friday night.

A group chanting "black lives matter" is making demands of Portland police.

Portland police were escorting the group through the Old Port, before protesters stopped in the middle of Commercial Street.

The protesters began chanting, "black lives matter," and other words in response to the recent shootings of black men by police officers in Baton Rouge and Minnesota.

Supporters and onlookers gathered around to watch the protest.

Police have asked the protesters to disperse, but they say they are prepared to be arrested.

Protesters kicked and screamed at a car that was trying to leave the scene.

Police eventually moved in and arrested a few protesters on Commercial Street.

Protesters then moved to Middle Street and set up in front of the Portland Police Department.

Portland police have called a press conference. Watch it here.
