1 dead after fuel truck, tractor-trailer collide in Franklin County
CHAIN OF PONDS TOWNSHIP (WGME) -- The Franklin County Sheriff Office is investigating a fatal crash involving a tractor-trailer and a fuel truck.
It happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday on Route 27 in Chain of Ponds Township, approximately 10 minutes south of the Canadian border.
Deputies originally said “a fuel truck and an empty tractor-trailer struck each as they attempted to pass each other on the road.”
However, deputies now say the tractor-trailer, driven by 70-year-old Jeffrey Lang, of Rumford, jackknifed due to snow-covered roads while going around a curve and collided with the fuel truck, driven by 51-year-old Gregory Hutchinson, of Carthage.
Hutchinson was killed instantly, according to deputies.
Lang’s condition is not known.
The fuel truck was loaded with 2,000 gallons of #2 oil and 800 gallons of Kerosene that ruptured from the tank at the scene. The DEP along with a contractor is working to contain the spill.
The fuel truck is owned by Dead River Company and the tractor-trailer is owned by Nicols Bros Trucking of Mexico.
