FREEPORT (WGME) -- The Town of Freeport is one step closer to becoming its own school district, withdrawing from Regional School Unit 5.

The Department of Education recently gave conditional approval to the withdrawal plan, which has had its first public hearing.

The committee that came up with the plan say supporters want to go out on their own for different reasons, including more local control.

Brunswick has agreed to be a school of "guaranteed acceptance" if the proposal is approved, and it's getting closer to becoming a reality.

Peter Murray, Freeport Withdrawal Committee, says: “From here, we'll have another public hearing.  The Town of Freeport’s working on a financial analysis and then a vote in November for withdrawal.  And if that vote passes, then on July 1st, 2015, Freeport will be a stand-alone school district."

RSU 5, which includes Pownal, Durham and Freeport, was formed in 2009. Freeport voted last December to begin the withdrawal process. Freeport is one step closer to becoming its own school district
