13 on your side: Powerball profits help Maine
AUGUSTA (WGME) – The
country is still waiting for someone to come forward to claim the
winnings in this weekend’s record breaking Powerball jackpot.
Saturday’s drawing was the latest single Powerball drawing ever.
The winning ticket was sold at a Publix Grocery Store in Zephyrhills,
Florida. Someone now holds a ticket worth more than $590 million.
Thousands of Mainers watched the big Powerball drawing, and while no
one here in our state hit the jackpot, the big prize is good news for
the state’s economy.
An official with the Maine State Lottery says the state made more than $600,000 in profit from Saturday’s drawing.
Lotto retailers in Maine sold almost 2 million dollars in Powerball
tickets. The state gets about $.33 in profit for each dollar. That’s a
Mainers have been playing Powerball since 2004. It quickly became
one of the most popular games for the Maine State Lottery. Powerball,
Mega millions and all the other games help support the state budget.
The general fund is powered by about $50 million in lottery proceeds every year.
Since 1974, the lottery has transferred a billion dollars to the
state’s general fund. That money is then redistributed to hundreds of
state programs and services.
Maine businesses also see an economic impact. Last year, the Maine
State Lottery paid $14 million in commissions and bonuses to places that
sell lotto tickets – that’s almost $11,000 for each gas station or
