Actor says Kevin Spacey made sexual advances toward him at the age of 14
WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) - In an interview with BuzzFeed News, actor Anthony Rapp has accused Kevin Spacey of climbing on top of him in bed and making a sexual advance.
When this alleged incident occurred, Rapp was 14 while Spacey was 26.
“It was a frozen moment,” said Rapp. “In terms of fight or flight or freeze, I tend to freeze.”
Rapp says Spacey picked him up and that he didn't initially squirm away because he didn't understand what was going on. The actor says, “he was trying to seduce me.”
“I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually,” Rapp explained.
He eventually pushed off Spacey and went to use the bathroom while in shock.
“I saw on the counter next to the sink a picture of him having his arm around a man. So I think on some level I was like, Oh. He's gay. I guess. Then I opened the door, and I was like, 'OK, I'm going to go home now,'" Rapp said. "He followed me to the front door of the apartment, and as I opened the door to leave, he was leaning on the front door[frame]. And he was like, 'Are you sure you wanna go?' I said, 'Yes, good night,' and then I did leave."
Rapp, who stars in "Star Trek: Discovery," says he was inspired to come out by the women who have talked about their experiences of sexual harassment in the entertainment industry.
"And not to simply air a grievance," he said, "but to try to shine another light on the decades of behavior that have been allowed to continue because many people, including myself, being silent.…I'm feeling really awake to the moment that we're living in, and I'm hopeful that this can make a difference."
Spacey responded to Rapp's story saying "if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years."
He also used the opportunity to explain his own sexuality saying, "I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man."
