Yarmouth train depot could soon have new owner

YARMOUTH (WGME) -- A historic train depot in Yarmouth could soon have a new owner. The century-old Yarmouth Grand Trunk Railroad Depot is for sale.

"It's been an icon, people know this building, they love it," says Sarah Hansen, Real Estate Manager at Maine Preservation.

When the railroad stopped being used in the 1960s, the depot was in danger of being demolished. Then the Yarmouth Village Improvement Society stepped in, buying the property for $500 in 1968.

"They did some repairs to it and in the early 1970s they leased it out for the very first time to a florist," says President of the Yarmouth Village Improvement Society, Linda Grant.

Last year, Grant says the florist decided not to renew that lease.

"So we decided to put it up for sale," Grant says, "But because it had been saved by the organization, it was our responsibility to save it into the future."

So the society is partnering with Maine Preservation and it's Protect and Sell Program to make sure it ends up in the right hands.

"The depot is actually in outstanding shape," Hansen says, "It does need some cosmetic updates, but things like the original wood ceilings, this beautiful fireplace, we want to see those type of things preserved, a lot of the historic windows."

The property, listed for $165,000, does need some work but Hansen says it's getting a lot of attention.

"We have seen people interested in everything from ice cream to commercial kitchen to office space, to retail, it really runs the gamut," Hansen says.

Hansen says the land underneath the depot is owned partially by the Maine Department of Transportation and partially by the town of Yarmouth. She says both parties have said they will work with the buyer on access and parking.

Hansen and grant hope whoever does take over the space will continue to share it with the community.

"This is truly a building that has not been changed since it was built," Grant says.
